I crouched down next to her.
“He was mean.”
She thought for a moment.
“Edward isn’t really your boyfriend?”Write Love Letters
“No.”
“So why did you say he
was?”
For a moment, lying would have been easier.
Instead, I told him the truth.
“Because I wanted your father to think that someone desired me.”
She frowned.
“But we wanted you to be here.”
I had no answer.
She hugged me.
That simple sentence had more of an effect on me than anything Edward or Max had said all evening.
After running back to the reception, Edward was still waiting.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“I’m still angry with you.”
“You should be.”
Then Max appeared.
Her confidence had returned, but it now seemed more fragile.
I stared at him.
“You’re marrying Claire. You got what you wanted. Why do you still need me to be unwanted?”
He did not reply.
Claire had followed him down the corridor.
Max glanced at him.
“She’s distorting the facts.”
Claire looked at me, then looked at him.
“You told me she had stopped
trying.”
“She did it.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“That’s not what I just heard.”
For the first time since Max had packed his bags, I wasn’t waiting for him to explain what his opinion meant about me.
Back inside, Edward began to put the old trousers back in the box.
“What are you going to do with it?” I asked.
“Take them to the donation center.”
“GOOD.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“I’m still angry with you.”
“Fair.”
“You owe me something.”
“That’s also true.”
“Start by removing those pants from my ex-husband’s wedding.”Book Venues
He picked up the box.
“The best fake date you’ve ever had.”
“The only fake date I’ve ever had.”
