I Asked a Coworker to Pretend to Be My Boyfriend at My Ex-Husband’s Wedding, but He Teased Me and Said, ‘No One Would Date You’ – So My Fake Date Wiped the Smile off His Face

“Still undefeated.”

I laughed in spite of myself.

Shortly afterwards, I gathered the girls together.

As we reached the exit, Max shouted my name.

“So, what’s going on between you and Edward?”

I turned around.

Even now, he needed

to know.

If Edward wanted me, Max could measure my worth by that.

If he hadn’t done it, Max could have measured it too.

“You really need the answer, don’t you?”

He opened his mouth.

I moved away.

Outside, my eldest daughter stopped by the car and smoothed down her dress.Compare Cars

“Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“Does it make me look weird?”

The question seemed to be posed innocuously.

It made the pain even more intense.

I could have told her immediately that she was beautiful.

Instead, I asked,

“Do you like the dress?”

She lowered her gaze, then turned around and watched her skirt move around her knees.

“Yeah.”

“So that’s the answer that matters.”

She smiled and got into the car.

Her little sister followed, leaving traces of icing on the door.

“I look clingy.”

I laughed.

” Absolutely. ”

After fastening it, I went around to the driver’s side.

My reflection appeared

in the dark window of the car.

Max’s old question came back for a moment.

“When was the last time you looked at yourself in a mirror?”

So I watched.

But this time, I didn’t check my size.

I did not turn on my side.

I wasn’t wondering what Max would criticize.

I didn’t ask myself if Edward would approve.

I simply looked at myself.

Then my three-year-old child screamed from inside the car,

“Mom! Go away!”

I smiled, opened the door and went in.
