I Asked a Coworker to Pretend to Be My Boyfriend at My Ex-Husband’s Wedding, but He Teased Me and Said, ‘No One Would Date You’ – So My Fake Date Wiped the Smile off His Face

“That’s funny. My husband talks about me like that.”

Edward’s smile

disappeared.

So I told him,

“I hate hearing it from her. I don’t like hearing it from you either.”

At that point, I took my cake and left.

I had almost forgotten about that conversation.

Edward had not done it.

“That made a mark on me,” he said.

Max seemed impatient.

“What exactly is the point?”

Edward folded his trousers over his arm.

“The fact is, Veronica never told me what weight I should be. She never told me I would be worth more if my body changed. She simply made me realize that I had started talking to myself the way someone else was talking to her.”

People were listening now.

Edward continued.

“I stopped putting off my life until I was happy with my appearance. Later, I changed some habits, and my body changed too.”

Max gave a mocking smile.

“So Veronica inspired you to get back in

shape. Great.”

“No.”

Edward replied immediately.

“That’s precisely what you still don’t understand.”

Max’s smile faded.

“She didn’t fix me. I didn’t have anything that needed fixing before I deserved to enjoy my own life.”

Claire glanced at Max.

Then it’s my turn.

Max let out an embarrassed laugh.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Edward handed him the trousers.

“Because you looked at me tonight and decided that my appearance proved something about Veronica.”

Max shrugged.

” Yes. ”

Edward held her gaze.

“So why are you still trying so hard to prove it?”

Max stopped smiling.

A few minutes later, Edward asked me to follow him down the corridor.

His expression had changed.

“Veronica, Max was wrong about you. But there’s something I should have told you before we arrived.”
